Emmit threw his hands in the air and twirled to the music. He closed his eyes and swayed and dipped. He tried to sing, but the words didn’t come out right. So he hummed and danced and listened to the man in the black box sing about the Beautiful One.

He’d tried to paint a picture of the beauty he remembered. But it came out all wrong. The colors weren’t right. The purple spilled, the yellow got all over the glasses, and Auntie Mar-ee took the paints away. All he really wanted was to see the Son. But painting was hard. The picture in his head was too fuzzy, and his hands wouldn’t do what he wanted.

But his ears still worked just fine. And his body could still move to the music. He could dance to the One he loved. The One he adored.

Emmit loved this song. When he heard it, he could almost see, almost remember. He used to sing this song once. For real. Why couldn’t he make the words come right anymore?

Clouds were in his head now, that was why. Funny dark clouds that made it hard to see. But he could still remember some things, especially when the music played. He remembered the snow. He remembered the ocean. He remembered God.

So it was okay that God sent him here to Auntie Mar-ee. It was okay that he couldn’t fly in the snow anymore. It was all okay. Because he loved God, he loved Auntie Mar-ee, and he loved the way the music made light dance through the room to cast away all the shadows.

So he listened, and he moved, and he let his heart sing.
